ARCHIVED - Illegitimate son of ex-king of Spain dies suddenly on day of tell-all interview
The waiter claimed he had DNA evidence proving that he was the child of the former Spanish monarch

A waiter who has long claimed to be the illegitimate love child of former King Juan Carlos of Spain collapsed in a bar over the weekend and died, just hours before he was due to take part in a tell-all TV interview.
Albert Sola, 66, dropped dead in a bar in the town of La Bisbal d’Emporda near the Catalan city of Girona on Saturday night, when he went to meet a friend for a drink after work.
Another patron at the Pa i Trago bar described the sudden incident: “He arrived with a friend, asked for a glass of wine, took hold of it and when he was heading to the table the friend was already sitting at, he keeled over. He didn’t even have time to try the wine”.
Sola, who bore a striking resemblance to the disgraced ex-king, spent most of his life trying to prove that he was the monarch’s unacknowledged son. He even claimed that he had DNA tests showing a 99% match with Juan Carlos, but the Spanish Supreme Court threw out his paternity lawsuit in 2015.
With most legal routes exhausted, Sola agreed to take part in a Spanish TV show called ‘Who is my father’ and his explosive interview was set to air on the day he died. His story will feature on next week’s episode but, unfortunately, he won’t be there to tell his side of the fascinating tale.
In preparation for the show, Sola met up with Belgian housewife Ingrid Sartiau, who is also adamant that she is the former king’s child. Juan Carlos, whose life has been steeped in controversy, was a notorious philanderer and many historians believe he could have fathered dozens of illegitimate children.
The emeritus king created more waves in Spain following the death of Queen Elizabeth, when he insisted on flying to the UK to attend her funeral despite the serious misgivings of the government.
