ARCHIVED - Improvements made to Minimum Living Income in Spain
People who suddenly lose their income in Spain will no longer have to wait a year before claiming the benefit
There is some good news on the horizon for workers in Spain as the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration has announced a series of improvements to the Minimum Living Income (IMV), chief among them being that people who lose their income suddenly will not have to wait for a year to access benefits, something which has previously left the newly unemployed “in no man’s land”.
In addition, the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030 has agreed to take into account the earnings from the previous month so that people will be afforded the maximum amount of the benefit. Prior to this, workers who suffered a serious loss of income would have to wait until the following year to apply for the IMV.
At a press conference on Monday October 18, both ministries also confirmed that the benefit will increase by 22% for families with a member with a disability and that the aid will not be considered as an income, so that other monetary assistance being received isn’t affected.
Another big change affects newly independent youngsters, who will no longer have to prove that they have been supporting themselves in the twelve months prior to being out of work. Likewise, people who use up all of their unemployment benefits and who were, until now, essentially unprotected, will no longer see their payment reduced.
Sources from the Ministry have indicated that, with all of these agreed improvements, including the previously announced supplement of up to 100 euros per dependent child, the current number of beneficiaries should double to around 700,000 households.
In order to facilitate the expected surge in requests, which has already surpassed 1.5 million, the Ministry has confirmed that Social Security will reinforce its workforce with more than 1,000 staff over the next three years.
