ARCHIVED - Incidence drops for second consecutive day: Spain Covid update January 20
The sixth wave continues to wreak havoc in Spain with almost 158,000 new cases and 160 deaths
Spain has experienced the second drop in 48 hours in its cumulative incidence rate on Wednesday January 19 after 11 weeks of uninterrupted increases during the sixth wave, a factor which the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, believes means that “we have already reached the peak of this epidemic wave or we are very close”.
Although the number of infections is still very high, health experts have reassured that this time around the probability of hospitalisation is up to eight times lower than last year, and while hospital pressure can’t be dismissed, the chance of being admitted to the ICU is between 10 and 15 times lower and fatalities are 20 times lower.
Coronavirus infections
On January 19, the autonomous communities registered 157,941 new cases of Covid, 60,025 of which were diagnosed in the last 24 hours. These figures are higher than the same day last week, when 179,125 infections were registered and significantly more than the previous day, which experienced the largest drop in daily cases since December.
In the past two weeks, 1,557,283 positives have been registered.
This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 8,676,916.
Meanwhile, the positivity rate stands at 39.31%, significantly above the 5% at which the World Health Organisation (WHO) considers the spread of the virus to be ‘controlled’.
Cumulative incidence rate
After the first decrease of the sixth wave on Tuesday, Spain’s 14-day cumulative incidence rate has plummeted once more to 3,286.44 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 3,306.52 the previous day.
By autonomous communities, Aragon, Navarra and the Basque Country maintain the highest incidence while Andalucía has had the lowest figures for weeks, now standing at 1,323.65 cases.
The Valencian Community remains slightly below the national average, with 3,199.06 cases per 100,000 inhabitants while the Region of Murcia of one of the higher areas, registering 5,103.57 infections.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
One of the most important indicators of the evolution of the pandemic in Spain is the occupation of intensive care units, which stands at 23.59%. It remains at high risk with 2,230 patients being treated for serious symptoms, but the figure has decreased compared to Tuesday (2,243), which may show that the sixth wave is finally beginning to peter out.
There are currently 19,000 patients admitted to general hospital with Covid (up from 18,918 on Tuesday) and the occupancy rate stands at 15.25%.
A further 160 new deaths have been reported on Tuesday compared to 125 on the same day last week, bringing the overall death toll since the health crisis began to 91,437.
Vaccination data
As of Wednesday January 19, 38,201,057 people – 90.6% of the population over the age of 12 – had been double jabbed while 92.5% (39,017,074) people have received their first dose.
