Indoor market or Plaza de Abastos in Águilas
Indoor markets were the heart and soul of the community before the advent of supermarkets
Plaza de Abastos de Águilas
Águilas has an indoor market place which is open throughout the week selling a selection of fresh food stuffs. This is open from Monday to Saturday between 9am and 2pm.
Historically these indoor markets were the heart and soul of every local community, but many have now largely been replaced by modern supermarkets, so in many towns there are fewer vendors now than when the markets were in their heyday. In Águilas, though, a project has focussed in recent years on revitalizing, updating and modernizing both the building and the way in which it is run, and this has resulted in a wide range of stalls apart from the traditional ones offering meat, fish, fruit and vegetables.
Shops and businesses here include two restaurants, a Cuban “taberna”, the Caseta del Lorito, a “churros” (doughnut stick) stand, a sweets and spices store, a cheese and gourmet products shop, a sewing service and a store offering arts and crafts items for sale, and these are soon to be added to by a takeaway meal service and a rice sho cooking establishment.
The market place is also used as a venue for gastronomic events during the year.
