ARCHIVED - Infections decrease while hospitalisations rise: Spain Covid update June 8
Health experts predict a spike in Covid cases this summer in Spain
The pandemic in Spain has continued to slow down in recent weeks with a general decrease in transmission and in the impact on the health services, although several experts are predicting a new surge as the summer season gets underway.
In particular, the director of the Centre for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies, Fernando Simón, predicts a significant increase in infections but believes that it is “unlikely” that the virus will take the same hold as before, given the high vaccination rate.
"People have been vaccinated to be able to live normally, and although infections will skyrocket in summer, the consequences, as up to now, will be milder,” the epidemiologist said this week.
“Summer festivals and other massive events are conducive to its spread," Mr Simon said, while calling for “prudence” rather than panic if the numbers begin to rise once more.
The cumulative incidence rate over a 14-day period in those aged 60 years and older stands at 585 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and although this has risen slightly in the last week or so, the number of beds occupied by Covid patients has dropped from 5.2% before the weekend to 5.5% today.
There are currently 6,761 people admitted for coronavirus in Spain, of which 322 are in intensive care. ICU Covid patients represent 3.62% of the total, a significant drop on the data from just a week ago.
According to the latest figures provided by the Ministry of Health in Spain, 280 more patients have been admitted to hospital since Friday June 3, but there are three fewer people in the country’s ICUs, and the departmental average remains at low risk, which is an occupation rate of between 2% and 5%.
The impact on hospitals naturally varies significantly across communities, with Madrid registering the highest occupation figures of 8.26%, followed by Castilla-La Mancha (7.95%) and the Basque Country (7.80%).
Since Friday, 33,293 new coronavirus cases have been reported in Spain, 17,499 of which were diagnosed in people aged over 60.
The population of over 80s continues to display the worst stats, with an incidence of 736 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the last two weeks.
The fatality rate of Covid in citizens of 60 years remains at 4.1%.
Since the last update, 93% of the population, or 39,232,214 people have received at least one Covid vaccination while 39,080,572 people (92.6%) are double jabbed.
