Ingenious or stupid? Passenger breaks wheels off carry-on suitcase to avoid Ryanair luggage charge

A video has been circling the net of a passenger about to board a flight to Málaga going to extreme lengths to avoid extra charges from Ryanair

We’ve all probably been there at some point – sweating at the airport while waiting to board the plane and wondering whether our hand luggage will pass the weight or size limits of the airline or whether we’ll have to fork out to be allowed to carry on our carry-on bags.

One unfortunate Spanish passenger was recently caught out by Ryanair staff when boarding a flight to Málaga. The man had tried to wheel through a small suitcase which was, nonetheless, too big for Ryanair’s strict luggage size requirements.

With a queue of people behind him waiting to get on the plane, the man was facing a 70-euro charge from Ryanair for having surpassed the size limits, but he was determined not to pay.

In a move that could either be pure genius or utter stupidity, the man proceeded to snap all four wheels off his little case until it fit in the blue metal thing that Ryanair have at their check-in gates for measuring luggage sizes.

After exchanging looks and listening to other Spanish passengers’ petitions to let him on, Ryanair staff decided the man was allowed onto the plane.

His bold move was greeted his applause from other waiting passengers, but comments on social media, where the video received over 3 million views in one day, have been less generous.

While some sympathised, asking “What good is cabin luggage if you can’t travel with it in the cabin?”, others were astounded that he wouldn’t just check the luggage sizes permitted by Ryanair before flying.

Most people pointed out that the guy managed to avoid paying the 70-euro fee but would now have to buy a new suitcase, which would probably cost him around 70 euros.

Another wag quipped, “The best way to save with Ryanair is by not flying with them.”

All Ryanair flights come with an allowance to take one small piece of carry-on luggage per person, measuring 40x20x25cm, for free. This must be able to fit under the sit in front of you.

Passengers have the option to pay extra for a 10kg bag measuring 55x40x20cm that can be stored in the overhead locker.
