ARCHIVED - Intense storms and plummeting temperatures in parts of Spain: weather forecast May 11-14
A polar air jet will bring lots of heavy rain and even some snowfall to many areas of Spain this weekend
The record heat we’ve been experiencing these past few weeks is about to come to an abrupt end with the entry of a cold polar air stream, which will lead to a general drop in temperatures and driving rain in the north and east of the country. Temperatures could fall by up 10ºC but unfortunately the south of Spain, where the worst of the drought is concentrated, will avoid most of the precipitation.
Ruben del Campo, spokesperson for the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), explained that the rains will mainly occur in the Cantabrian area and the Pyrenees, where they could become persistent over the weekend. Showers occasionally accompanied by hail are also forecast in Catalonia and other parts of eastern Spain, along with the Balearic Islands.
In addition, cold northerly winds will "put an end to a long warm episode of practically a month."
The weather will be colder than normal in the north, where daytime temperatures could be between 5 and 10ºC below normal on Friday and there could even be some snow on the mountains from about 1,400 metres. In the rest of the country the temperatures will be more typical for mid-May.
Northern Spain will be mostly overcast with persistent rain throughout Thursday May 11 with cloudy intervals forecast for the Mediterranean coast, where some weak showers could occur later in the day.
The temperatures, both the minimum and the maximum, will drop in an almost general way in most of the country. Weak frosts are expected in the Pyrenees.
The Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Navarra and the Basque Country are all on yellow alert for heavy rain and stormy conditions.
On Friday May 12 there will be abundant cloudiness and rainfall in the Cantabrian area which, on the Basque coast, will be persistent. Storms are forecast in Catalonia and the rest of eastern Spain will become more overcast in the afternoon with the chance of heavy rain.
There could also be showers in the Balearic archipelago while in the rest of the country the skies will be a lot clearer. The thermometers will plummet in the northern Spain.
"In cities like Soria, Pamplona or Burgos, it will hardly reach 15ºC or they will record between 5 and 10ºC lower than the normal average for the time in those cities," explained del Campo.
A yellow alert for rain has been activated in the Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Navarra, Valencia and the Basque Country.
The outlook is similar for Saturday May 13, with rainfall in the extreme north of Spain, which will be persistent on the Basque coast and north of Navarra. The rest of the country will be mostly clear but the daytime temperatures should climb slightly with the exception of the extreme south and the Balearic Islands.
Weak frosts will continue to occur in the Pyrenees.
The Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Navarra, Valencia and the Basque Country are all on yellow alert for rain on Saturday.
Looking ahead to Sunday May 14 and the rain will continue to fall in the extreme north, although plenty of showers are expected along the east coast and the Balearic Islands again, becoming weaker and more dispersed than in previous days.
In the rest of the country, especially in the west, the skies will be clearer and the temperatures will increase in most of Spain. The weather on Sunday will likely be "normal for this time of year or if anything even cooler at night in the northern half of the peninsula."
No weather warnings have been issued.
