ARCHIVED - Intentional forest fire in Galicia burns through 1,500 hectares
The deliberate fire has affected several municipalities in Lugo, Galicia
A forest fire in Ribas de Sil (Galicia) has finally been declared stabilised after burning through almost 1,500 hectares of land since Sunday night, September 5.
This was by far the largest wildfire in the region this year and, due to its proximity to towns and villages, forced the regional Minister for Rural Environment to declare the fire a level two emergency.
The local authorities even called in the military to help slow the spread of the fire, which forced several roads and train lines to be closed off and some local residents to be evacuated as a precautionary measure.

According to the authorities, the uncontrollable blaze started in two different areas on Sunday night and is thought to have been set deliberately. The flames then easily spread across Lugo thanks to the high temperatures and southern winds on Monday September 6 and Tuesday September 7).
Thankfully, firefighters and military personnel received assistance from mother nature when it started raining on Tuesday afternoon, allowing them to get the fire under control.
The president of the Junta de Galicia has asked for members of the public to come forward if they have any information about who may have set the fire.
