ARCHIVED - Irish gangster The Monk welcomed back to his favourite Costal del Sol restaurant after being cleared of murder
Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch was arrested at the Malaga eatery before facing trial in Ireland for the Regency Hotel slaying
Career gangster Gerry Hutch, known better by his nickname ‘The Monk’, was cleared earlier this week of orchestrating the Regency Hotel attack that claimed the life of David Byrne in February 2016. His dramatic and very public arrest was made in a popular pizzeria in Fuengirola, which has now said it will welcome him back with open arms.
Officers from the Guardia Civil swooped in to the Limoncello restaurant just as the gang leader was ordering an early dinner and dragged him away in cuffs. Now, waiters at the eatery in the seaside resort’s old town remember the 60-year-old fondly and look forward seeing him soon, since the drug lord has already admitted he plans on moving back to Spain.
“Oh yes, Gerry, how could I forget? We remember this night very well. Of course, we welcome him back,” staff member Marlena Pelarea said.
“Of course, he should come back, we welcome him! Lots of Irish came to visit then, we remember all the videos.
“We are a great restaurant, very popular, good restaurant. Yes, Gerry, tell him to come finish his pizza. We will cook him something nice,” Marlena added.
Following the Regency attack, Hutch’s brother Eddie was murdered by a rival gang and, with a price on his head, The Monk fled to the Costa del Sol, where he changed his appearance and tried to live a life under the radar.
There was nothing low-key about his arrest though, and in the restaurant Hutch famously quipped to a Guardia Civil officer: “The jacket, you must be roastin’ in that.”
