ARCHIVED - Irish tourist drowns at Spanish holiday resort
The holidaymaker in his 40s drowned at a pool at an apartment block in La Pineda, Spain's Costa Dorada
An Irish tourist in his 40s has drowned at a swimming pool in La Pineda holiday resort near the east coast city of Tarragona on Spain's Costa Dorada.
The alarm was raised just after 11am on Tuesday morning, August 9, and despite efforts to revive him by emergency responders, he was pronounced dead before his body was removed for a post mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
According to Spanish police sources, the unnamed holidaymaker who was staying in the area with relatives, perished in a pool that is part of Apartments Pineda Park complex just minutes from the beach.
“There isn't anything at this stage to suggest this man’s death was the result of a crime and it is being treated as accidental," confirmed the Mossos d’Esquadra police in a statement.
Online, the complex is described as “ideal for the accommodation of families with children and couples who want to spend a vacation on the Costa Dorada, where the best beaches on the Mediterranean coast are located.”
Out of "respect for the family", management at the apartments declined to comment.
