Irish tourist engulfed in flames at Costa del Sol wedding
The woman suffered severe burns when her dress caught fire in Malaga
A 29-year-old Irish woman is fighting for her life in a Spanish hospital after a horrific accident at a friend's wedding in the Costa del Sol resort of Nerja in Malaga.
The incident occurred on Thursday September 19, when the woman's dress caught fire on decorative candles in the bathroom of a holiday rental apartment.
Fellow guests at the wedding celebration were left in shock as they discovered the woman semi-conscious and engulfed in flames. They quickly phoned the emergency services and paramedics rushed to the scene to provide assistance.
It’s understood that the woman was initially taken to a hospital in Malaga, where she underwent emergency surgery to treat severe burns to her legs and body. She was later transferred to a specialist burns unit at Sevilla's Virgen del Rocio University Hospital, where she remains in a critical condition.
Medics at the burns unit have told local press that they cannot predict the woman's recovery at this stage, and her outlook "remains uncertain." The incident is being treated as a horrific accident, and it is unclear if the police are involved in an ongoing investigation.
The incident occurred during an after-party at the holiday apartments in Nerja's famous Balcon de Europa viewpoint area, where the Irish couple had earlier tied the knot. The celebration had been organised by the newlyweds, and the woman was a guest at the wedding.
