Irish tourist found strangled to death on corridor floor at hotel in Spain
An Irish man, believed to be her partner, has been arrested on suspicion of murder
A 30-year-old Irish tourist has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman, thought to be his partner, was found strangled to death on a corridor floor at a hotel in Spain.
A member of staff at the four-star hotel in the Costa Dorada resort of Salou reportedly found the 36-year-old victim, also Irish, lying lifeless in a hallway on Sunday night, July 2.
Her alleged killer, discovered beside her with a suspected ‘self-inflicted’ wrist wound, was taken to hospital where he remained under police guard on Monday morning.
The pair, reportedly from Dublin, were staying at the four-star, adult-only Magnolia Hotel in Salou when the alarm was raised by the hotel worker at 9.30pm.
Management have said they are unable to make any comment as an investigation is underway.
A spokesperson for the regional Mossos d'Esquadra police force said: “Officers from the Mossos d'Esquadra’s Criminal Investigation Decision in Tarragona have arrested a man allegedly related to the violent death of a woman in Salou last night.
“The events occurred around half past nine when the Mossos received a warning from a hotel in Salou saying a woman was seriously injured. When they arrived at the scene, the officers found a woman lying on the floor and a man next to her with a self-inflicted wound.
“Although emergency medical responders tried to revive the woman, they were finally only able to certify her death. Officers arrested the man as the alleged perpetrator of the death.”
In a statement to the Irish Mirror, a police spokesperson confirmed they were made aware of the incident.
“Garda Síochána is aware of an alleged incident that took place in the Spanish town of Salou involving Irish citizen(s) on Sunday, July 2nd 2023.
“As this is an investigation led by the Spanish authorities, An Garda Síochána has no further comment at this time.”
For its part, the Department of Foreign Affairs said it is “aware of the case and providing consular assistance. As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the details of individual cases.”
