ARCHIVED - Javea cove closes to the public for good and is buried under 4.5 tons of stone
Former plans to restore Cala del Tangó in the Marina Alta area of Alicante province have been deemed unfeasible
Javea's Tangó cove, also known as La Cala del Pope, has been closed to the public once and for all after plans to restore the beach were shelved as unfeasible, with council technicians warning "the work would have a significant impact on the marine life of the Cape Sant Antoni reserve".
Work has already begun to reinforce the harbour breakwater, which was seriously undermined by storms in 2017 and the Gloria squall in 2020. The project involves reinforcing the breakwater with 4.5 tons of stones, completing wiping out the cove.
Cala del Tangó has unofficially been closed for 20 years due to storms and landslides, but there were hopes it would be restored. These were dashed when a report commissioned by the regional government concluded restoration would be detrimental to the environment.
Experts warned that the PORN del Montgó (the marine reserve forms part of the Montgó natural park) does not allow the regeneration of beaches or any other coastal infrastructure which requires "hydrodynamic, sedimentological, ecological or landscape alterations".
Technicians made it clear that the recovery of the Tangó requires the construction of "structures that would move the line of breakers and protect the cove area to avoid the dragging of gravel", basically, erosion. This solution, they warned, "would have a significant impact on the marine life of the Cape Sant Antoni reserve".
In contrast, according to environmental impact reports, the reinforcement with large breakwater stones won't damage the marine reserve or the Posidonia oceanica meadow, and an anti-pollution barrier has been installed to prevent turbidity from spreading when the coastal water is stirred up.
