ARCHIVED - Jet2 adds new flights between Malaga and the UK
The budget airline has been flying tourists to the Costa del Sol for 20 years
Britain’s favourite budget airline Jet2 celebrated its 20 year anniversary in the Costa del Sol, where the first flight from Leeds touched down in Malaga two decades ago. In honour of the occasion, the carrier has announced that it will expand its operations further by adding a new route between Bristol and Malaga, which will fly four times a week.
Jet2 has become the largest tour operator from the United Kingdom to Spain since landing on the peninsula in 2003 and currently offers 114 routes to 13 destinations between the Spanish mainland, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands.
In the Costa del Sol, the airline operated 60 flights every week during the summer between Malaga and the UK, offering 700,000 seats between the Andalucia base and Leeds-Bradford, Manchester, Newcastle, Birmingham, London Stansted, East Midlands, Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Bristol.
“The 20th anniversary comes at a peak time for the company. In 2022 it has established itself as the second airline that has carried the most Britons to Spain, more than 4.1 million, that is, one in four Brits who have travelled to Spain in 2002. We have increased the figures even compared to the summer of 2019, in the face of a general drop in air traffic between the two countries,” Jet2 CEO Steve Heapy said at the anniversary event held in Madrid.
And it seems the only way is up for the airline, with Heapy confirming that “the forecasts for this summer in Spain are for additional growth of 4% compared to 2022.”
