ARCHIVED - July temperatures return for the final stretch of April: Spain weather Apr 24-27
The thermometers will exceed 40ºC in many parts of southern Spain this week as a subtropical air mass hits the country
The arrival of a maritime air mass from the subtropical Atlantic will once again bring midsummer heat to many areas of Spain, with the mercury expected to hit values more typical of the beginning of July than the end of April. This high pressure will guarantee sunny skies and virtually no rain, with the south of the country predicted to bask in 40ºC temperatures.
“This, together with the arrival of a very warm air mass from low latitudes, will cause a progressive and general increase in temperatures, which will lead to a warm episode during the next week that is very unusual due to its intensity for the time of year,” explained Aemet spokesperson Ruben del Campo.
Although the real ’heatwave’ will kick in from Tuesday, the daytime temperature on Monday April 24 will exceed 25ºC in large areas of the centre, south and east of the country, and even reaching 30 or 32ºC in the Guadiana and Guadalquivir valleys.
Northern Spain will remain a bit overcast with a chance of some light showers but the south will be bright and sunny, possibly with some high clouds towards the afternoon.
Few changes are expected on Tuesday April 25 although the mercury will ramp up considerably, reaching a scorching 36ºC in Murcia and tipping the scales at 34 or 35ºC in the likes of Seville and Cordoba.
The morning could be a little cloudy in southern Spain and in the Balearic Islands but there will be plenty of sunny spells throughout the day.
Temperatures will continue to rise across the board on Wednesday April 26, particularly in the north of the country, easily exceeding 30ºC in southern Galicia and the Ebro basin.
On Wednesday, “the daytime temperatures, if this forecast is confirmed, will be typical of the beginning of July, temperatures typical of midsummer,” del Campo explained, adding that “it is possible that the situation continues through Thursday and Friday, with temperatures more or less similar or even slightly higher on Thursday.
At the moment, Aemet is predicting very stable weather in most of the country on Thursday April 27, although an Atlantic low could bring some cloudy intervals to a large part of northern and northwestern Spain. The rest of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands will be mostly clear and bright.
Most of Andalucía will bask in temperatures in the mid to high 30s but light coastal breezes will ease the heat somewhat.
While it’s still too early to tell with any great degree of certainty, Aemet expects the warm spell to continue into the beginning of next week, and in all likelihood this month will end up being the driest April since records began back in 1961. What little rain is forecast over the weekend will be confined to the extreme north of the country.
Until now, the driest April ever was reported in 1995, when just 23 litres per m2 of rain fell.
"It's getting less and less likely that we'll reach that number by the end of the month," del Campo said.
