June 11 Guided walk around Monte Arabi and its rock prehistoric art in the Yecla countryside
The mystical mountain of Monte Arabí is at the centre of numerous local legends
The imposing rocky bulk of Monte Arabí stands out from the surrounding countryside and has for centuries been revered as a strange, beautiful and even mysterious place, with numerous local legends having grown up around it. The mountain is recognized as an Item of Cultural Interest and was the first site to be declared a Natural Monument in the Region of Murcia.
This guided walk follows the circular PR-MU91 route and is punctuated by stops for information from the official guide, as well as by visits to the prehistoric Rock Art sites of Cantos de Visera I and II. These are recognized as Items of World Heritage by UNESCO, and the visit is in the company of a specialist from the Cayetano de Mergelina archaeological museum in Yecla.
The route is approximately 6 kilometres and is expected to take 4 hours, beginning at 9.30 at the roundabout on Ronda Norte in Yecla, alongside Bodegas Castaño (click for map). From there participants are required to use their own transport to the starting point of the hike.
A booking fee of 2.50 is needed to cover municipal admission fees to see the rock art sites, and walkers are advised to wear appropriate clothing (including cap) and footwear and to bring a snack and drinking water, as well as sun cream.
Online booking is available here.
Further information and bookings are also available from the tourist office of Yecla (Plaza Mayor, s/n), telephone 968 754104, email turismo@yecla.es.
