ARCHIVED - La Palma registers more than 300 earthquakes in one day
Experts are concerned after days of believing the activity of the volcano was declining
Despite the fact that notable scientists predicted that the devastation caused by the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma showed signs of coming to an end just a few short days ago, earthquakes continue to rock the Canary Island on a regular basis, with a staggering number of tremors recorded on Wednesday November 17 alone, the most recorded since the original eruption on September 19.
Up until this point, no more than 100 earthquakes had been experienced in a 24-hour period for the entire month and this, together with a reduction in the sulfur levels in the atmosphere, led experts to believe that the worst was over. In just one day, 300 separate earthquakes were reported.

The most earthquakes recorded in a single day occurred on September 14, but they all registered a maximum of 3 on the Richter scale. This Wednesday, two thirds were between a magnitude of 2 and 3 and the remainder registered up to 4, with one even exceeding the magnitude 4 mark.
Now, scientific bodies responsible for monitoring the evolution of the volcanic eruption are scrambling to collect data to establish if the seismic activity this week is just a one-off rebound or if the change in behaviour signals a differing momentum in the volcano after days of apparent downward activity.
