ARCHIVED - Larger dog breeds allowed on Spanish trains in Renfe pilot project
Currently only service dogs and pets under 10kg are allowed to travel on trains in Spain

In response to repeated demands from animal groups and pet owners across Spain, state-owned railway company Renfe is launching a pilot project which will allow passengers to bring dogs weighing up to 40kg on board.
The trial will last three months and begin on September 13 on the Madrid-Barcelona line.
Up until now, travelling cross-country by train with our pooches in tow has been far from easy. While many animals including cats, dogs and ferrets are allowed, only one animal is permitted per passenger and dogs can weigh a maximum of 10kg. This is very restricting, especially since some of the most popular breeds in Spain, like labradors and border collies, far exceed this threshold.
For the pilot project, passengers will still be limited to one dog and the maximum allowed will be two per train car; travellers will have to ensure that they book two seats and the animal is secure at all times.
Assistance dogs and pets weighing less than 10kg are excluded from the pilot test.
“This test is one more step in the commitment that the company has with its customers, thus valuing the importance for the traveller of being able to travel with their pets,” a Renfe spokesperson said this week.
To ensure the success of the project, Nestlé Purina has provided Renfe with a travel guide for its customers on the safest and most comfortable practices for train travel.
Some of the company’s top tips include bringing a dog blanket and a toy – preferably a non-squeaky one that won’t bother other passengers. Pet owners should avoid feeding their pooch for three hours before the trip to prevent dizziness and a good long walk before the journey should help dogs to relax.
