Last heat warning of August: Alicante weekend weather forecast August 28-31
Highs of around 36ºC or more today should give way to more typical temperatures for the end of August
Only Alicante is feeling the heat today
The fierce heat that was forecast to return to Alicante province today now comes with a yellow warning from state meteorological agency Aemet.
Alicante is the only province in the country to be affected by this, as the other warnings today are for rain and storms further north up the coast, in Castellón province and in Barcelona and Girona in Cataluña, and the Balearic Islands.
Thursday, August 28
Maximum temperatures around 4pm
Although the yellow warning does not indicate a risk to the general population, precautions should be taken to protect vulnerable people, such as children and the elderly, or if you are planning to engage in any strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, which is from 1pm until 8pm.
Maximum temperatures are likely to hit around 36ºC in many places in the south of the province, or even up to 37ºC in Alicante city and 38ºC in Elche and Orihuela city.
The heat should be less acute in the north of the Costa Blanca and further inland, where highs of up to 34ºC and 33ºC are predicted for Denia and Alcoy respectively, while in Benidorm it may only get up to about 30ºC.
However the humidity will be much lower during the day, so it may not feel quite so oppressive, and the haze of dust and sand, known as ‘calima’ has now cleared.
Light, variable but predominantly westerly breezes in the morning will be replaced by light but occasionally moderate easterly breezes later on.
The skies will be mostly clear with some cloudy intervals further north from Benidorm to Denia.
Friday, August 29
High altitude cloud in the afternoon
The maximum temperatures should drop on Friday, with only Elche and Orihuela city likely to get up to 35ºC and most other areas, near the coast and inland, only reaching around 31ºC.
The light variable breezes will get warmer later on, predominantly from the south on the coast, and the west inland.
Some cloudy intervals in the morning will be replaced by high altitude clouds in the afternoon.
Nighttime temperatures will remain around 24ºC on the coast, dropping progressively further inland as low as 18ºC in Villena and Pinoso.
Saturday, August 30
Clear skies in the morning
Heading into the weekend, Saturday is forecast to get off to a sunny start, with cloudy intervals moving across the province from midday throughout the afternoon and into the evening.
Temperatures should remain relatively unchanged, and the wind will be similarly light in the morning with some moderate easterly intervals in the afternoon.
Sunday, August 31
Maximum and minimum temperatures
The last day of the month is looking a bit warmer, up to 33ºC in many areas, but slightly cooler on the coast and hotter in Orihuela and the interior of the province.
The humidity will be higher but nowhere near the levels that have been seen in recent weeks, and at this stage there is expected to be hardly any wind at all.
The minimum temperatures may drop a little more too, down to 22ºC on the coast.
There may be some cloudy intervals in the south in the morning, spreading across the rest of the province as the day goes on.
