ARCHIVED - Last month was the wettest July of the century in the Region of Murcia
This year saw the sixth warmest July of the 21st century in the Region
The month of July was a turbulent one in the Region of Murcia in meteorological terms, ranging from heatwaves and weather warnings for extreme high temperatures to treacherous thunderstorms complete with flooding and falling trees. So it comes as no surprise that the seventh month of 2021 has broken some records, with the first six days registering well above the usual maximum and minimum temperatures expected.
On July 11, a storm passed from the north of France to the northwest of Spain, bringing with it stifling westerly winds which raised the thermometers even higher in Murcia on the 12th. The high pressure that dominated the north of the Peninsula prevented the onset of the storms, keeping the atmosphere stable and with maximum temperatures somewhat higher than normal values until the 22nd.
By the 26th, the entire Region was under an orange weather alert for storms, and while there was localised flooding in Águilas and Puerto Lumbreras, a fallen tree in Murcia, and a hail storm in Mazarrón, thankfully no major injuries or damage were reported.
The month ended with the passage of a new wave of low pressure that did not generate rainfall over the Region, but increased temperatures on the 30th and 31st that reached up to 40 degrees in some parts of the Region.
Temperatures
The average monthly temperature for July in Murcia was 26.1 degrees, making it the eleventh warmest of the last 61 years and the sixth warmest of the 21st century. The days with the highest average temperatures were July 12 and 24, and the lowest was the 15th. July 12 saw the highest temperature of all, with a blistering 45 degrees recorded in the Alcantarilla Observatory, the third-highest in 82 years.
Precipitation
During the month of July, the average rainfall in the Region of Murcia was 10.5 litres per square metre, which is more than six times the median value for the month, bring with it some extremely humid and muggy weather. July 2021 was the sixth wettest in the last 61 years, and the wettest of the 21st century.
The highest accumulated rainfall during the month, 69.2 l / m2, was recorded in Puerto Lumbreras. All the monthly precipitation was recorded on the 26th with stormy showers accompanied by hail and which reached very strong intensities in various parts of the Region, becoming torrential in many municipalities.
