ARCHIVED - Lebanese passengers request asylum on Barcelona flight
The asylum seekers were travelling from Egypt and had a stop-over in Spain

There was chaos in Barcelona on Monday November 15 as 39 passengers with Lebanese passports travelling from Egypt refused to continue their journey after a stop-over in the El Prat de Llobregat airport and instead demanded asylum in Spain.
The passengers, apparently of Palestinian origin, were travelling on a charter flight bound for Bogotá in Columbia and Quito in Ecuador, which landed in Barcelona around 11am before the second leg of the trip.
After the passengers refused to leave Spain they were moved to a secure room in the airport where asylum applications are processed. The Police have 72 hours to verify the identities of the travellers and ensure that there are no outstanding arrest warrants. Once this has been done, the asylum seekers will be assisted by the national reception system run by the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration.
The application for asylum comes just days after a plane travelling on the Casablanca – Istanbul route was diverted to Palma de Mallorca airport due to a false medical emergency. Once the flight had landed, dozens of passengers, most of whom were Moroccan, barged past security and fled from the airport.
