ARCHIVED - Let it snow: what does the Spanish weather have in store this Christmas?
The early forecasters explore the chances of Spain having a white Christmas this year

One of the top reasons most people move to Spain from the UK and other chilly climes is the mild weather, but this doesn’t stop many of us from dreaming of a white Christmas once the tree goes up.
It might seem more likely this year given the unusual 11-and-a-half months we’ve already had, but although it’s still a bit soon to tell with certainty, meteorologists predict that Christmas week will be largely dry with relatively warm temperatures, so sadly, that means no snow.
Storm Efraín, which has caused widespread flooding up and down the country, is set to call a truce in the coming weeks, and this weekend most of Spain will enjoy at least some sunny spells. That being said, another cold snap is on the way leading up to the big day, and the mercury will plummet to icy lows from Wednesday December 21.
This cool spell will be gone as quickly as it arrived though, and the temperatures will climb back up to higher than normal values by Christmas Eve, reaching 21ºC in parts of Alicante.
"Temperature trends suggest that there will not be a 'white' Christmas," Francisco Martín, an expert at Meteored, confirmed.
It will be mostly dry between December 19 and 25, according to Aemet, with the exception of some weak showers mainly in Galicia, Extremadura and Castilla y León. The rest of Spain will enjoy a Christmas weekend of clear skies and particularly warm afternoons – good news for anyone planing to hit the beach on the 25th.
There’ll be very little cloud cover after dark all week though, so the nights are set to be pretty nippy.
All good things must come to an end and unfortunately, the weather is going to turn just in time for us to welcome 2023. During the week of December 26 to January 1, it will be rainy in most of southern Spain and the Canary Islands although the north will get a reprieve after weeks of storms.
It will still be a shade warmer than usual for this time of year, most noticeably in the south and central Spain.
