Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota killed in car crash in Spain
The 28-year-old and his brother died while driving through Zamora in northwest Spain

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has died following a fatal car accident in the northern Spanish town of Zamora early on the morning of Thursday July 3.
The 28-year was killed, alongside his brother André, aged 26 and also a professional footballer, when the car they were travelling in ran off the road and burst into flames.
The accident occurred around 12.30pm at kilometre 65 of the A-52 near Cernadilla, near the municipality of Palacios de Sanabria. According to the authorities, the vehicle in which André and Diogo Jota were travelling left the road and caught fire. The flames also quickly spread through nearby vegetation.
Although several witnesses present in the area who saw the flames quickly called 112, the accident was fatal and claimed the lives of the Liverpool footballer and his brother, who played for Peñafiel in Portugal.
Following the alert, the Guardia Civil Traffic Department, the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Department and Primary Care medical personnel from the Mombuey health centre quickly arrived at the scene.
However, it has been confirmed that the brothers were killed instantly.
Diogo Jota had married his wife, Rute Cardoso, just a few days earlier after more than a decade together. The Liverpool player took advantage of his June vacation to marry the woman of his life.
According to local news reports, the car was reduced to ashes and the bodies were charred and practically unrecognisable. Medical personnel were able to identify them thanks to the license plate of the car they were travelling in.
At 28, Diogo Jota had become an important player for Liverpool, as well as an international for Portugal, with whom he won the Nations League just a month ago after beating Spain in the final. He joined Liverpool in 2020 after the Reds paid Wolverhampton €44.7 million for his transfer.
