ARCHIVED - London denies former Spanish king met with King Charles this week
The British Royal House has confirmed that the ex-king of Spain didn’t meet with any of the Family
Disgraced emeritus king of Spain, Juan Carlos I, has returned to Spain on Wednesday April 19 for a high-profile sailing regatta after a brief stop in London, but the Palace has denied that the former monarch met with any of the British Royal Family.
Juan Carlos announced his packed schedule last week and sources confirmed that he would be meeting with King Charles III for a private lunch prior to his coronation on May 6, something which the British Royal House and the UK Embassy in Spain now confirm never happened.
During his couple of days in London, the ex-king, who abdicated his throne in 2014 amid a tax scandal before fleeing to Abu Dhabi in 2020, was spotted at the Oswald Club on Monday (April 17), a swanky joint whose private members include Queen Consort Camilla, Prince William, former British Prime Ministers Boris Johnson and Liz Truss as well as Ivanka Trump, daughter of former US President Donald Trump.
He then joined Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez later that afternoon at Stamford Bridge to watch the white club play Chelsea in the second leg of the Champions League quarterfinals.
The emeritus king will travel to Sanxenxo in Pontevedra to the sailing competition, his first visit to the Spanish region since his self-imposed exile in the United Arab Emirates.
Juan Carlos is expected to be invited to the Royal coronation of King Charles next month, along with the rest of his family, and has hinted that he might take part in the 6-metre class sailing World Cup in the UK, set to run between August 31 and September 8.
