Lorca beaches get ready for the summer season
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
A major cleaning operation is underway in Lorca to prepare the shorelines for the season ahead
In anticipation of a busy summer ahead, Lorca City Council has employed a cleaning company to ready the municipality’s beaches for the flocks of tourists expected to arrive. The work will begin with a ‘shock’ scrubbing of the sand to remove accumulated debris.
Throughout the high season, the same contractor will be responsible for the daily cleaning of the beaches and waste collection, and money has been set aside in the budget to intensify these services during the busiest months, July and August.
Councillor for the Environment, María Hernández Benítez, explained that the contract also includes the “cleaning and screening of the sand, the collection of algae in a controlled manner with return to its beach of origin – in case large accumulations make access to the bathroom difficult – as well as such as the cleaning of the urban centre of Ramonete.”
Finally, large chemical toilets adapted for people with reduced mobility will be set up in Cala de Calnegre and Puntas de Calnegre beach, which will have adequate maintenance and cleaning.
All of these services will begin on Friday June 14 and run until Monday September 16.
In a separate action, the council has applied for permission to use drones to monitor the beaches and to erect signs to advise when and where this surveillance will be taking place. The drones are intended to keep bathers safe while also ensuring these protected natural spaces are respected.
Finally, the contract for beacons for the bathing area and signalling of the entry and exit channel for boats on the Puntas de Calnegre and Cala de Calnegre beaches for the 2024 and 2025 season is in the process of being implemented.
Work scheduled for Lorca’s beaches:
- Puntas de Calnegre: 5 90-litre plastic bins, 1 footbath, 1 rubber walkway, 2 chemical toilets (1 conventional and 1 adapted for the disabled).
- Cala de Calnegre: 2 metal or wooden rubbish bins, 1 footbath, 2 wooden walkways, 1 rest area with shade for the disabled, 1 surveillance tower with module for Civil Protection, 1 chemical toilet adapted for the disabled.
- Cala del Siscar: 1 metal or wooden bin and 2 90-litre plastic containers, as well as 2 wooden walkways.
- Cala del Baño de las Mujeres: 1 metal or wooden bin and 1 plastic bin, as well as 1 wooden walkway.
