ARCHIVED - Lorca protests the temporary suspension of local rail services
Dozens of people from all over the Region of Murcia attended the demonstration at the Lorca-Sutullena railway station
On Wednesday afternoon, disgruntled rail users converged at the Lorca-Sutullena station to protest against the temporary closure of the Murcia-Lorca-Águilas commuter line while AVE works are carried out over the next three years. As well as local representatives from Lorca, demonstrators also arrived from other affected areas such as Murcia, Alcantarilla, Librilla, Alhama, Totana, La Hoya, Almendricos, Pulpí, Jaravia, Águilas and Puerto Lumbreras .
Despite the fact that those responsible for the project have reassured customers that RENFE will provide coaches on all the usual routes while the rail lines are closed, a spokesperson for the Platform in Defence of the Railroad voiced his concerns that the project could see the lines disrupted for up to eight years, and not the three that have been suggested.
This autumn Adif intends to close the Cercanias line that connects Murcia with Lorca and Águilas and the long-distance connection with Cieza and Chinchilla in order to carry out work on the AVE in Barriomar and other sections of the high-speed AVE track to Almeria, instead of applying specific closures, which it did while the high-speed service was being built in the direction of Alicante.
ADIF has itself said that it would be impossible to carry out the work required without closing the existing line, as the infrastructure already in place is part of the new structure. The proposed improvements to the line will reduce traveling time between Murcia and Águilas by almost 30 minutes and give the town an important link into the high-speed rail service.
