Lorca-Mazarrón €1.2 million road works reach halfway stage

The latest stage of the project has begun with new asphalt being laid along a 5.3-kilometre section of the road

Drivers using the road between Lorca and Mazarrón should have a smoother journey early next year, with a €1.2 million improvement project now halfway complete. The work is being carried out along a 5.3-kilometre section of the RM-332, one of the main routes connecting the two municipalities. Around two million people use the road each year, with traffic increasing significantly during the summer.

Workers have now started resurfacing the road, adding two new layers of asphalt, each five centimetres thick. The hard shoulders will also be resurfaced. The project is expected to be completed in January and should improve both driving conditions and road safety along the busy route.

Regional councillor for Infrastructure and Territorial Development Jorge García Montoro visited the works on Monday to see how they are progressing. He described the RM-332 as "fundamental" for connecting Lorca and Mazarrón, as well as for tourism and the transport of goods.

There has already been quite a bit of work going on behind the scenes. Pipes for irrigation, water and drainage affected by the project have been dealt with, while earthworks have been carried out where the road needs to be widened. Once the new asphalt is in place, the final jobs will include painting the road markings, installing new signs and adding safety barriers and marker posts.

And there could be even bigger changes ahead for the route. The regional government is continuing with the paperwork and environmental checks for plans to build a higher-capacity road linking the area with the Bay of Mazarrón. The new road is intended to make it easier to reach the coast and support tourism and other local businesses in Mazarrón.

The regional government is also investing more than €1.6 million in a number of other road improvement projects around Lorca.
