Los Alcázares beaches: Playa de Las Salinas

Playa de Las Salinas is a popular kitesurfing corner between Los Alcázares and San Javier

Los Alcázares beaches: Playa de Las SalinasThis 1,200-metre-long beach stretches from Calle Pintor Delacroix northwards towards the former Murcia-San Javier airport and the outskirts of Santiago de La Ribera.

At 25 metres it is also one of the widest stretches of sand on this part of Mar Menor coastline and consists of two main areas: an artificial sand area with a promenade, and a stretch of wild natural beach which is listed as a Specially Protected Area of Mediterranean Importance (SPAMI) at its closest point to Santiago de La Ribera. The unique ecosystem here is due to the special conditions and temperature of the water in the Mar Menor, and is used as a stopover for many migratory birds: with luck you may see stilts, rails, warblers and herons.

To facilitate access there are raised walkways through the reeds, leading to a secluded area of beach which can also be accessed from the campsite. Behind the beach is an area that has been party developed so there is more parking here than in other areas of Los Alcázares.

Los Alcázares beaches: Playa de Las SalinasThere is also a paved promenade which starts here and runs all the way along the shore of Los Alcázares to Playa de la Concha, a distance of 7 kilometres. This is very with walkers, joggers and cyclists throughout the year and many park here, enjoy their exercise and then chill in the attractive beach bar.

The beach bar is also the base for a water sports school offering activities such as kitesurfing, windsurfing, sailing and canoeing. Kitesurfing is the most popular activity here due to favourable winds and the shallow water, but there is also beach volleyball available on this stretch of coast. The enclosed nature of the whole area makes it a safe and protected environment for water sports beginners and intermediates, although the wind tends to be stronger in autumn and early spring.

There are also other bars further along the seafront walk.

Other facilities

Los Alcázares beaches: Playa de Las SalinasThere are ample facilities with toilets, bins, recycling points, footwashes, wooden walkways onto the beach, disabled bathing seats, lifeguard and auxiliary medical cover as well as assisted bathing available throughout the summer period.

Safety precautions at Mar Menor beaches

Most of the Mar Menor beaches have very gently sloping shelves, meaning that bathers can walk a considerable distance from the shore and still only be waist high in the water. These shore fringes are also very warm, heating up more than the deeper water and the Mediterranean, particularly during the hot summer months.

Many beaches are also protected by netting to exclude jellyfish. This creates safe bathing areas for families but there is also a danger as the calm water means that many elderly bathers bathe alone. This in itself is not dangerous, but every year there are unnecessary fatalities when bathers suffer heart attacks, strokes, faints or dizzy spells, slipping into the water without anyone else being aware.

The transition from hot beach to cold water can shock the body, causing dizziness or fainting, so it is advisable to splash the body with water to cool down before wading out!
