ARCHIVED - Los Alcazares plans to ban cars from town centre
The Mar Menor town’s centre is going to be remodelled to favour pedestrians over traffic
A new plan to remodel the centre of Los Alcázares is based on creating more pedestrian only areas to reduce traffic. A large portion of Calle de la Concepción, between Avenida 13 de Octubre and Calle Santa Isabel, is going to be completely closed to traffic using semi-permanent barriers, which can be moved in case of emergency.
Pedestrians will also have more safe areas along Avenida 13 de Octubre, with only one lane (towards Calle Cartagena) being left open for vehicles. More parking spaces are also going to be created along the avenue.
The project also includes three new childrens’ parks: one in Plaza de la Feria, one on Calle Fuster and another in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, where ‘plant pergolas’ (made out of climbing plants) are going to be placed to create more shaded areas.
New parking spaces
The plan also incorporates new, alternative car parks on unused lots in the municipality, specifically on Calle de Los Luisos and Avenida de la Libertad, complete with an app which allows users to check for free parking spaces on their mobile phones. Electric vehicle users will be glad to hear that there is also going to be at least one additional charging point for electric cars.
