Locals in Cartagena villages have set up neighbourhood watches to deter thieves
Western villages and districts in the municipality of Cartagena, as well as areas on the Mar Menor’s coast, have been affected by a series of house robberies, with concerned residents requesting greater police presence.Frequent break-ins during November and December led to fed up residents taking matters into their own hands by patrolling the streets at night. Locals take turns to drive around the area after dark and warn the police if they see anything suspicious. The president of the Neighbourhood Association in Galifa (Cartagena) has said that, by patrolling the streets, they have managed to prevent several potential robberies. In Los Urrutias, criminals have been taking advantage of the large number of uninhabited properties to steal anything they can get their hands on, especially pipes, copper, aluminium and steel. The large number of second residences and holiday homes in Mar Menor villages like Los Urrutias provides thieves with the perfect opportunity to steal when they’re empty during the winter months. On one occasion, the brazen thieves even tried to rob a pharmacy, but they were unable to break the security glass.Locals have urgently requested a greater police presence in these areas and have asked Cartagena council to establish a specific branch of the Cartagena Policía Local for this purpose, ensuring faster response times for outlying districts, especially at night.Image: Guardia Civil
