ARCHIVED - Madrid firefighter killed in hit and run on the way to rescue a cat
The 45-year-old rescue worker died from multiple internal injuries at a Madrid hospital

Alberto, a firefighter from Madrid who volunteered in cat rescues, has died at the age of 45 at the La Paz Hospital after being run over while cycling a BiciMad service bicycle in the Moratalaz district of the Spanish capital.
The brave firefighter was cycling along the Vinateros road at around 10pm on Monday July 25 on his way to save a cat which had fallen down a drain when he was struck by a vehicle whose driver fled the scene.
His colleagues paid a heartbreaking tribute to Alberto on Facebook:
“Today is one of those days in which one does not want to wake up and think that it is just another day... like any other,” the post begins, before going on to detail the tragic circumstances of the hit and run.
“Yesterday we received a notice at 10pm of a cat that had fallen down a drain. We immediately set off, some by car and Alberto on a bike, since he did not have a car and it was close to home.
“We were all waiting for him, but he did not arrive. We called him and a municipal policeman answered the phone who told us that he had been hit by a car that has fled in Moratalaz.”
The firefighter was transferred to hospital with a broken pelvis and injuries to several vital organs and underwent emergency surgery, but he sadly passed away a short time later. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
Alberto’s colleagues described him as both a friend and co-worker, someone who was cheerful and very loved, and always ready to come to the rescue of an animal in need. They have called on the authorities to “find the murderer who killed” their friend and ensure “that the full weight of justice falls on him”.
Several onlookers witnessed the accident and identified a dark-coloured vehicle, and even memorised part of the number plate. The Madrid Municipal Police is investigating the hit and run and currently checking all security camera footage in the area.
