ARCHIVED - Madrid metro burglar trapped in ventilation shaft for 2 days
The man had to receive medical attention before being arrested in the Carabanchel district of Madrid
A 23-year-old man of Ecuadorian origin has been arrested by the Policía Nacional in Madrid after spending almost 48 hours trapped in a ventilation shaft at one of the Metro offices in Plaza Elíptica, in the Carabanchel district of the Spanish capital.
The man became trapped in the vent when attempting to burgle the Metro offices in the early hours of Monday morning. His entry went undetected until security guards saw that one of the metal doors to the premises had been broken down and lights were on, at which point they called in the police.
Initially, police officers saw that various parts of the false plasterboard ceiling had been removed and that someone had emptied drawers and office furniture, and they eventually inspected the ventilation shaft and discovered the young man inside. After receiving medical attention he was placed under arrest, and investigations are on-going to ascertain whether any accomplices were involved in the attempted burglary.
