ARCHIVED - Madrid supports adding Djokovic to the Mutua Open line-up
The mayor believes the tennis star’s presence would be a ‘big win’ for Madrid
Spain has now weighed in on the seemingly endless Novak Djokovic saga with the mayor of Madrid saying it would be “a great claim” if the tennis star opted to play in the upcoming Mutua Madrid open, despite the fact that the sportsman was deported from Australia for failing to abide by the country’s Covid regulations.
Extolling the “advertising” benefits and notoriety the star’s presence would offer the Spanish competition, José Luis Martínez-Almeida added that “it should not be ignored that Novak Djokovic, despite what he has suffered in Australia and France, is still number 1 in the world at the moment.”
The French government has just confirmed that Djokovic will not be allowed to play Roland Garros unless he gets vaccinated. The latest hammer blow comes as France’s Minister of Sports announced that it is now mandatory for all spectators, practitioners and professionals to be double jabbed in order to enter sporting grounds, be they “French or foreign”.
Along this vein, Madrid acknowledged that it would be down to Spain’s national government to decide on the country’s entry requirements and whether or not the tennis star meets them to participate in the competition, due to be held from April 26 to May 8.
The mayor’s comments have unsurprisingly created a lot of backlash with opposition parties accusing him of putting the interests of Madrid above the law of the land by extolling a famous face who has refused to get vaccinated and knowingly broke the rules.
