ARCHIVED - Madrid to begin vaccinating young children on December 15
Antigen tests will also be available free of charge to people living in the capital of Spain
The Community of Madrid has largely been making its own decisions in the recent months of the coronavirus pandemic, refusing to implement a Covid passport or further restrictions as many other autonomous communities have been doing. And although health experts in Spain have dismissed any immediate need to vaccinate children, Madrid has just announced that the Pfizer jab will be rolled-out to youngsters aged between 5 and 11 from December 15.
On the same date, health authorities will begin dispensing free antigen tests in pharmacies and the contracts of healthcare professionals will be extended to continue tackling the pandemic.
From Thursday December 2, those in the 60 to 69 age group can make an appointment to avail themselves of the booster jab, once six months has passed since the second Pfizer or Moderna dose has been administered, or three months in the case of Janssen or AstraZeneca.
Regarding the vaccination of children, only the start date is currently known, but it is estimated that somewhere between 300,000 and 400,000 youngsters will be immunised.
The regional health authorities have requested that companies organising Christmas dinners or parties test their employees before the event, and from this month all Madrilenians will be able to pick up a free Covid test from their local pharmacy.
For now, the president of Madrid has firmly ruled out “returning to massive closures in an alarming way” and instead will continue to focus on maintaining existing safety measures, such as social distancing and mask wearing.
