ARCHIVED - Madrid eliminates capacity restrictions in bars and restaurants
The new measures take the community of Madrid ‘practically one step’ away from its pre-pandemic lifestyle
The regional president of Madrid announced a series of dramatic changes to the coronavirus restrictions on Wednesday September 29 given the positive evolution of the pandemic and the success of the vaccination campaign, which has now seen almost 80% of the population of Spain receive at least one jab. Isabel Diaz Ayuso confirmed that capacity restrictions would be completely eliminated from Monday October 4, indicating that the community is “practically one step away from continuing as before the pandemic.”
Madrid had already made great strides toward the ‘new normal’ by easing restrictions on the hospitality industry on September 20 and removing capacity limits from cinemas and theatres. However, from Monday, no businesses will be subject to capacity regulations, with restrictions being lifted on bars, places of worship, weddings, shops and sporting facilities to name just a few.
The maximum limit of diners per table, both indoors and out, will also disappear, and service in the bars of hotels can once again resume after being closed for more than a year and a half. Customers will have to remain seated, however.
For the time being, all Madrilenians over the age of six will have to continue wearing masks indoors, except when eating or drinking, while people can remove their face covering outside once a safe distance can be maintained.
On announcing the relaxation of restrictions, Ms Diaz Ayuso commented that Madrid is in a “privileged situation” to be in a position to balance the health crisis and public safety with the economic need of the community, and added that the region has already recovered “all the employment that had been lost during the pandemic”.
