Mallorca considers increasing cruise tourism
The Spanish island currently only allows three cruise ships per day

A controversial decision by the government to limit cruise ships in the Palma de Mallorca port could soon be overturned by the newly-appointed administration. A call was made last year to allow no more than three big liners dock each day in a bid to reduce harmful emissions in addition to cutting down on the number of holidaymakers.
However, the new powers that be are open to allowing more cruise tourism from as early as 2025, but only during the low season.
Minister of Tourism Jaume Bauzà said: "Any tourist who arrives in Mallorca is welcome and cruise tourism, consequently, is. It is our will and what the Government wants to convey."
Following a meeting earlier this week, the director of Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) in Spain, Alfredo Serrano, praised the positive move and said that cruise demand in Palma has never been higher.
Asked about delaying the increase in cruise liners for two more years, Mr Bauzá explained that shipping companies already have their schedules locked in until the end of 2024. Since it’s been agreed that cruise tourism won’t be expanded during the high summer season, it stands to reason that the changes will be made from the autumn of 2025.
"The intention is to analyse the extension of the calls in the low season of 2025, always within a context of sustainability and efficiency," he said.
"We do not rule out expanding the scales but we are going to study it."
Cruise tourism contributes more than €500million to the Balearic Islands annually and generates more than 4,000 jobs.
Back in February, the sitting government of the Balearic Islands caused uproar when it announced that it had set a limit of 16.5 million holidaymakers per year that the region can comfortably accommodate.
