ARCHIVED - Man, 70, drowns at beach in Mazarron despite the efforts of an off-duty nurse
The latest coastal tragedy happened at Bahía beach in Puerto de Mazarrón
In the latest tragedy to hit the Region of Murcia coastline, a 70-year-old man has died after being pulled unconscious from the water at Bahía beach in Puerto de Mazarrón.
An off-duty nurse who was nearby immediately stepped in and began resuscitation techniques before Mazarrón Civil Protection rescuers arrived with a defibrillator just after 8.40pm.
Officers from Mazarrón Local Police, the Guardia Cicil and a SAMU ambulance with medics were also depatched by the 112 Emergency Coordination Centre, but advanced resuscitation manoeuvres were also in vain and the elderly bather was pronounced dead at the scene.
An 82-year-old woman was hospitalised after losing consciousness in the sea at Mazarrón's La Isla beach last Thursday, August 4. Once she was stabilised on the sand and had regained consciousness, the octogenarian was taken to the Hospital General Universitario Santa Lucía de Cartagena.
And a week ago, a 52-year-old man drowned on the beach of Las Amoladeras in La Manga del Mar.
Drowning was the third leading cause of death due to external or accidental causes in Spain in 2020, claiming the lives of 406 people.
