ARCHIVED - Man caught using metal detector and pickaxe on archaeological site in Lorca arrested
The culprit had excavated four pieces of lead and a fragment of pottery using a metal detector and a pickaxe when the police arived
The Guardia Civil in the Region of Murcia have detained a person who was searching and excavating a protected archaeological site in Coy, located in the municipality of Lorca. The site is home to a Roman Villa which dates back to the first to the fifth century A.D.
The incident took place in the surroundings of the Roman Villa “Los Villares” and the Guardia Civil were alerted by the public that there was a person with a pickaxe and a metal detector attempting to steal historic artefacts.
Officers from the SEPRONA department of the Guardia Civil quickly arrived at the scene and, when he spotted the police officers, the suspect threw his tools on the ground and attempted to flee.
The culprit did not have any kind of authorization form public or private entities to carry out this activity and has been investigated for looting and crimes against historical heritage.
The metal detector used for this illegal activity has been seized, along with four pieces of lead and a fragment of ceramic pottery, which have been handed over to the Archaeological Museum of Lorca.
Throughout the operation, the Guardia Civil collaborated with the Archaeological Museum of Lorca and the Directorate of Cultural Assets (Historical Heritage Service) of the Region of Murcia.
