A 46-year-old man died on Saturday at the beach of El Pedrucho in La Manga del Mar Menor while attempting to rescue a bather who was experiencing problems in the water of the Mediterranean, apparently suffering a heart attack as he rushed into the water to help.
The incident occurred at approximately 13.30 close to Kilometre 9.5 of the main road along La Manga, when the victim saw that another bather was calling for help while being dragged out to sea by the tide. Unfortunately, though, he too was overwhelmed by the waves and while the first bather was rescued alive, those who hurried to help the would-be rescue were not able to bring him ashore until after he had stopped breathing. Efforts by ambulance staff to revive the man proved fruitless.
