May 14 to 17 International Urban Art Festival in Los Alcázares
50 new murals planned over just one weekend as Los Alcázares shows off its growing artistic heritage!
Few visitors to Los Alcázares will have failed to notice that the town is packed with examples of urban art mural paintings (click here for map of those already on display), and in fact this is one of the aspects of the built-up area which the Town Hall actively promotes, encouraging the creation of new works which adorn the area rather than merely disfiguring it as simpler graffiti does.
In the light of this, and always keen to expand the artistic heritage which has grown in the town over the last few years, the council is helping to organize an International Urban Art Festival over the weekend of 14th to 17th May, during which the intention is create as many as 50 new murals in the municipality, with artists converging on the shore of the Mar Menor not only from all over Spain but also from other countries including Colombia, Palestina, Venezuela, France, Germany and Portugal.
There are plans for 8 new large-format murals and 42 small and medium-sized ones and among those taking part are 14 artists belonging to the La Compañía de Mario (Soybegobe, Goyo203, José Karma, Indaal, Esther, Lusil, Sole, Hamgeo, Lobo López, Cari Escudero, Jesús La Sombra, Unoisaac, Natalia and Willy Arenas). Among the other Spanish creative artists are Jotalo, Deih, Manomatic and Mr. Chapu, while international representatives include Rocket01 (Portugal), Otto (Alemania) and Juan Mac (Francia).
This, according to Councillor for Culture Antonio López Campoy, will make Los Alcázares the “international capital of urban art” for the weekend!
In terms of officially programmed events the weekend begins on Friday 15th May at 18.00 with a series of presentations in the Town Hall by arts and museum directors, and the following evening from 18.00 until midnight the Compañía de Mario unveils new headquarters next to the fire brigade, with an exhibition of works and DJ music.
One of the more socially inclusive projects is the creation of a mural by users of the Asociación Nuevos Alvares for the disabled in Cieza, and for curious onlookers there are a series of guided tours and visits being held over the weekend.
