Mazarron beaches: Playa de la Raja

A low density semi-urban beach with sand and shingle shoreline in the east of Mazarrón

A 350 metre long beach

The Playa de la Raja is the second beach encountered when entering the municipality of Mazarrón municipality from its neighbour Cartagena, and is just a few metres further along the coastline from Playa del Mojón. Like Playa del Mojón, it is alongside the main E-22 road between Isla Plana and Puerto de Mazarrón, and is nearer to Isla Plana than to Puerto de Mazarrón.

This is a low-density beach as parking is limited, and although it is perfectly possible to access it by walking along the shoreline from Playa Mojón few choose to do so as there is plenty of room on the 465-metre-long Blue Flag beach, which is serviced by lifeguards and a beach bar in summer and is also low density.

The Playa de la Raya is long, measuring the regional oceanographic research centre sitting on a rocky outcrop and Playa Mojón, but averages only 10 metres in width and is noticeably more shingly than Playa Mojón. It also accumulates posidonia seaweed deposits during the winter months, as substantial meadows of this valuable and important ocean grass are to be found just offshore.

The shoreline is a mixture of sand and shingle and there are some rocks slightly offshore, so bathing shoes are a sensible addition to the mandatory towel, suncream, sunglasses and hat during the hot months of summer.

This beach is just a minute’s walk from the Los Delfines camping site, and for this reason there is a bus stop by Playa Mojón on a regular route which runs between Mazarrón and Cartagena as follows: Cartagena - Cuesta Blanca -  La Azohía - Isla Plana – El Alamillo – Puerto de Mazarrón- Playa Grande – Bolnuevo - Mazarrón

Parking is limited: there are some parking spaces at the top of the steps leading down to Playa Mojón but during peak weeks it can be difficult to park here, and there is also a dust track leading off road but again with very limited space.
