Mazarron, Cartagena and Mar Menor towns propose new railway line to join Costa Calida municipalities
In a historical meeting, representatives of towns all along the Murcia coast have agreed to boost the ‘Costa Cálida’ brand, including with a possible new rail connection
The Mayor of Mazarrón, Ginés Campillo, has taken part in a meeting this week convened by the president of the employers’ association COEC, Ana Correa, together with the Mayors of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo; La Unión, Joaquín Zapata; Los Alcázares, Mario Cervera; San Javier, José Miguel Luengo; and the Councillor for Tourism in San Pedro del Pinatar, Javier Castejón.
The meeting resulted in the proposal, supported by all the Councillors present, to commission a technical and environmental feasibility study of the connection by railway, linking the municipalities of the Mar Menor, from San Pedro del Pinatar to La Manga, in a first phase, and those of the western area, in a second phase, to Mazarrón and Águilas and its subsequent connection.
This proposal, if deemed feasible, would go a long way towards propagating tourism in the municipalities of the ‘Arco del Mar Menor’ and would represent a major improvement in public transport links and communications between all the towns along the Murcia coastline.
The need for joint tourism promotion management under the umbrella and brand of Costa Cálida was also highlighted in the historical meeting, something that would contribute more effectively to the global positioning of the Murcia coast and its tourist attractions, using a single brand that would allow the Region to grow as a destination.
Another of the issues discussed at the meeting, and on which all parties present agreed, was the need for the Autonomous Community of Murcia to assume the powers of the Coast, something that would undoubtedly simplify bureaucracy and would benefit the tourism entrepreneurs in the area.
All the mayors, councillors and business leaders left the meeting having made a commitment to meet periodically in order to join forces and make progress on common issues that affect all municipalities and entrepreneurs in the Campo de Cartagena region.
