Mazarron greenlights pedestrian walkways through the Roman remains of the Paseo del Alamillo
A series of paths will give both conservationists and visitors far better access to the ancient Mazarrón site
History buffs will soon be able to take a real step back in time after the green light was given to a project to install a series of walkways through the ancient Roman ruin of the Paseo del Alamillo in Mazarrón and the traditional Roman Villa beyond.
The plans for the delicate work will be painstakingly prepared by the Secretary of State for the Environment to guarantee the protection of "the remains through a design of walkways that allow their conservation and visualisation and that link the sections of the promenade on both sides of the area with the archaeological remains."
Back in the second half of the 1st Century BC, the Romans built several fish factories in and around Puerto de Mazarrón to take advantage of the high demand for ‘garum’, a valuable fish sauce that was later exported from the Mediterranean throughout the Empire. Smaller operations dedicated to macerating and fermenting the fish have been excavated along the coast and in the late 1980s a well-preserved farmstead-come-villa was discovered alongside the beach of El Alamillo.
Now, the future Paseo del Alamillo will pair an attractive walkway along the bay and the conservation of the Roman remains, giving pedestrians a unique insight into this historic life.
The extensive site is divided into two main functions: the first is a traditional residential building (the villa) complete with hot springs. The second was likely an industrial area that once contained six pools or tanks for the storage of fish and sauce.
The villa is part of the Roman complex which also includes the picturesque aqueduct in the area among other remains found during the urbanisation of the area in the last part of the 20th century.
