Mercadona switches to summer and Sunday opening hours across Spain
Spain’s favourite supermarket is extending its opening hours at nearly 300 stores

We know it’s only the one day but let’s face it: supermarket winter hours, particularly Sunday closures, can be a bit of a pain, especially for holidaymakers flying to Spain late on Saturday. That’s why we’re excited to reveal that the country’s favourite supermarket chain Mercadona has just announced its extended summer opening hours.
On Monday June 23, Mercadona launched its new store hours in almost 300 supermarkets across Spain. These changes will apply primarily to stores located in high-traffic tourist areas, where demand typically increases during the summer months.
From June 23 until August 31, selected stores will open from 9am until 10pm, offering customers an uninterrupted 13-hour service window each day.
The move comes as part of Mercadona’s effort to better serve its "bosses," the term the company uses for its customers, particularly in holiday destinations along the coast.
Shoppers in Mercadona’s home region of the Valencian Community, in towns such as Cullera, Tavernes de la Valldigna, Benicàssim, Oropesa del Mar, Peñíscola, Denia, Jávea and Benidorm, will be among those to benefit from the extended 10pm closing.
Similar changes will also be implemented in other popular destinations including Lloret de Mar, Salou, Ibiza, Marbella and Sanxenxo, among lots of others.
In addition to longer hours on weekdays, some of these stores will also open on Sundays to accommodate the seasonal surge in visitors. The company recommends that customers check the exact opening hours of their local store by using the search tool available on Mercadona’s official website, as hours can vary depending on location.
For the rest of its 1,602 supermarkets nationwide, Mercadona’s standard summer schedule of 9am to 9.30pm will remain in effect, excluding holidays.
In line with its ongoing commitment to employee wellbeing, the company maintains a policy of closing on non-working days to ensure staff have adequate rest and personal time.
