ARCHIVED - Meryl Streep wins Spanish Princess of Asturias Award
The coveted prize for the arts is among the most coveted in Spain
Long considered one the Hollywood greats, Meryl Streep has picked up one of Spain’s most prestigious accolades, the Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts. The 73-year-old was honoured for her extensive acting career, through which she managed to give “life to full and complex feminine characters which inspire reflection and a critical spirit in the spectator.”
On Wednesday April 26, she beat off stiff competition from 44 candidates of 20 nationalities but for Meryl, who has already claimed three Oscars, such recognition is just part of the job.
In her extensive career, which spans more than four decades, films such as Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), Out of Africa (1985), The Bridges of Madison County (1995), The Devil Wears Prada (2006), and The Iron Lady (2011) are just some of the highlights.
Her latest movie, Don’t Look Up, was released in 2021.
The award is endowed with a sculpture of Joan Miró, a diploma and 50,000 euros in prize money.
The jury, chaired by Miguel Zugaza Miranda, described the American actress as a “tireless activist in favour of equality. With her talent and rigor, she has enabled different generations to enjoy unforgettable performances, gaining the respect that this great art deserves.”
Other past winners of the Princess of Asturias award include English director Peter Brook, and American directors Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola.
