ARCHIVED - Migrant child dies of hypothermia off the coast of Spain
The immigrants had been at sea on their way to Spain for almost two weeks
One of the six children rescued from a migrant boat off the south coast of the Spanish island of Gran Canaria on Saturday October 24 has sadly died, after being transferred to hospital by helicopter suffering from dehydration and hypothermia. According to emergency response team Salvamento, the boat was located around 200 kilometres from land and eight of the occupants were immediately transferred to hospital due to their poor condition.
The migrant boat was carrying men, women and children of sub-Saharan origin, including two seriously ill babies. The other 44 occupants arrived at the port of Arguineguin at around midnight after being at sea for between one and two weeks.
