ARCHIVED - Monkeypox: Second Region of Murcia case confirmed in a 50-year-old
A third suspected monkeypox case is under investigation in the Region of Murcia
Unlike 15 other autonomous communities in Spain, the Region of Murcia has so far managed to dodge an influx of monkeypox cases as the figure exceeds 800 across the country.
But whilst the Region remains a far cry from the likes of Madrid with almost 440 cases, the Ministry of Health has confirmed on Wednesday July 5 a second positive and a third still under investigation. The first was reported on June 14.
The latest confirmed case is a patient aged 50 and a resident of the Region, although no further information has been released. The suspected infection is that of a 30-year-old from Area 1 of the Region who is currently undergoing epidemiological follow-ups and remains isolated at home. Again its not clear if the person is male or female.
Following protocol established by the Ministry, the possible infection was declared a "probable case" pending confirmation of a test by the National Microbiology Centre.
If confirmed, this will be the third case of monkeypox detected in the Region.
As such, the Ministry of Health is reinforcing a "message of reassurance to the public", assuring that the regional health system is "prepared to deal with this pathology, as well as for its diagnosis, control and epidemiological monitoring".
Illnesses associated with monkeypox include secondary bacterial infections and mouth ulcers, although symptoms such as rashes, headaches, fever, asthenia and localised lymphadenopathy are also reportedly commonplace.
