ARCHIVED - More delays than cancellations: day 8 of Ryanair strike in Spain
11 Spanish flights have been cancelled while more than 200 were delayed
The second round of Ryanair cabin crew strikes in Spain is well underway and Wednesday July 13 marked Day 8 overall, but the work stoppages aren’t having nearly as much impact as travel experts feared, with the airline claiming that a paltry 1% of flights are affected.
In all, 11 flights to and from Spain were cancelled up until 7pm on Wednesday while 231 suffered delays, and Barcelona’s El Prat airport once again bore the brunt, racking up six axed routes. It’s followed by Madrid, where two departures and two arrivals were grounded and finally, one flight due to leave from Malaga was cancelled.
In terms of delays, La Palma was the worst affected airport in Wednesday, recording 54 delayed flights, followed by Barcelona (50), Alicante (38) and Malaga (33). The rest are distributed throughout the other airports.

USO and SITCPLA, the unions representing cabin crew in Spain, have announced additional 24-hour stoppages for July 14, 15, 18, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27 and 28 at the ten Spanish airports where Ryanair operates – Madrid, Malaga, Seville, Alicante , Valencia, Barcelona, Girona, Santiago de Compostela, Ibiza and Palma de Mallorca.
The conflict over pay and working conditions has so far resulted in five dismissals with cases filed against an additional 70 airline staff.
The unions have pleaded with the Spanish government to “try to do something” as the industrial action drags on, with Ryanair refusing to negotiating.
While the disruption in recent days has been minimal the situation is about to change with easyJet cabin crew joining the fray with strikes of their own later this week.
