ARCHIVED - More mixed weather dominates this week: Spain forecast May 8-11
Heavy rain will hit northern Spain while summer temperatures will continue in the south
This week will start off pretty stable in most of Spain but the entry of several Atlantic fronts will pull the temperatures down and leave plenty of rain in their wake as the days go on. Much of southern Spain was drenched in a deluge over the weekend but over the coming days, the worst of the storms will be confined to the north.
As is usual for May, the thermometers will fluctuate rather wildly, with capitals like Seville and Cordoba once again expected to see records of more than 35ºC. This heat will likely ease off during the second half of the week and the mercury will actually drop to single digits at night in several northern provinces.
Monday May 8 will dawn overcast in most areas although this will clear considerably in the south as the afternoon approaches. On the other hand, the cloudiness will increase in the north as the day goes on with light showers forecast.
Daytimes temperatures will increase in practically all areas with the exception of the Andalucían Mediterranean coast while much of the southwest will top out at 30ºC.
Trade winds with strong gusts are expected in the Canary Islands while the Balearics have been issued with a yellow alert for rough seas.
The first of the Atlantic fronts will sweep into northern Spain on Tuesday May 9 resulting in cloudy skies and showers that will spread from west to east throughout the day. Mostly clear weather with some high clouds is forecast in the south.
The maximum temperatures will drop in the west and northwest of the country, picking up again in the southeast and the Canary Islands, where most places will exceed the 30-degree mark.
Trade winds will gust in the Canary Islands again but no weather warnings have been issued.
There ‘s plenty of rain forecast in the north on Wednesday May 10 but it will be weak and scattered in general, although it could spread to the Balearic Islands in the afternoon where a yellow warning for stormy seas has been activated.
With the exception of the extreme south, most of Spain will be overcast on Wednesday with a chance of showers in mountainous areas.
Daytime temperatures will drop across the board, most notable in the east, while the thermometers will climb slightly in the Canary Islands. The night will be a little uncomfortable in the Mediterranean area with the mercury hovering in the high teens.
More cloudy skies are forecast in the extreme north of the country on Thursday May 11, with weak but persistent rainfall in the north of Galicia, Cantabria and the Pyrenees. Cloud cover will increase in eastern Spain as the day moves on with a low probability of scattered showers in eastern Andalucía and inland Valencia.
Both day and night-time temperatures will continue the decrease that began on Wednesday, although large parts of Andalucía will still easily exceed 30ºC.
