More rain and storms plus a sharp drop in temperatures: Spain weather forecast September 9-12
Expect some more rain in Spain later in the week
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued new warnings for significant changes in weather conditions across various parts of Spain. Following a period of heavy rainfall, primarily in the eastern regions of the country, meteorologists are forecasting further rain and storms alongside a noticeable drop in temperatures.
It will be a relatively stable start to the week, although Catalonia and the Balearic Islands are under yellow alerts for rain, thunderstorms, wind and high waves, but then Aemet forecasts a marked increase in rainfall from Wednesday onwards. The humid air currently affecting the north will bring cloudy skies and occasional light showers in the region.
In northwestern Spain, such as Castilla y León, the arrival of a mass of cooler air will push temperatures down to more autumnal levels.
Across the country, temperatures are expected to plunge, with maximum daytime temperatures staying below 30°C in nearly all provincial capitals. Night-time temperatures will drop below 10°C in many inland areas, particularly in the northern plateau, Galicia and mountainous regions.
By Wednesday September 11, a significant decrease in temperatures is forecast, with Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and areas in northern Spain set to experience cooler weather. Despite an expected slight rise in temperatures in some areas on Tuesday 10, the trend towards cooler conditions will be felt widely, with a sharp decline by Thursday 12.
This arrival of cooler air will trigger more intense cloud formation and rainfall, effects that will be felt more significantly on Wednesday and Thursday, particularly in the northern third of Spain and along Mediterranean coastal areas, where heavy rainfall is expected.
By the weekend, however, there is a chance the weather will stabilise, with an anticyclone predicted to settle over the western part of the Iberian Peninsula, providing a reprieve from the unsettled weather.
